Fifteen years after Ondi Timoner’s film Dig! shot The Brian Jonestown Massacre to international fame comes the first ever book on the controversial band and their leader, Anton Newcombe, who together have been at the forefront of the resurgence of psychedelic rock in recent decades—and become one of the most infamous and controversial bands around in the process.
Drawing on years of extensive research and personal interviews with over 125 people connected to the band —including former and current members Joel Gion, Matt Hollywood, Jeff Davies, Rick Maymi, and Frankie Emerson, as well as The Dandy Warhols, Miranda Lee Richards, Dave Deresinski, and Ondi Timoner—Keep Music Evil The Brian Jonestown Massacre Story digs
a little deeper into the history of the band and the making of the film.
Written as a personal narrative that evokes the New Journalism of Tom Wolfe and Hunter S. Thompson, Keep Music Evil sets the record straight, once and for all, providing close insights into the band’s origins in early 1990s San Francisco, their record-making process, and the full, unexpurgated tale of Dig! Featuring rare, candid photographs of the band from throughout their career, this is the first comprehensive study of one of modern rock’n’roll’s most enduring sagas.

"Jesse deserves credit for putting in the ten years of effort, writing, and interviews to get this onto the shelves. As a long time BJM fan I've frequently wished there was a book about the band in the music section of every book store I've been to.
The good:
We get as close to an accurate timeline of Anton and the progression of the band. We see the evolution of BJM as it changes shape and direction over the last few decades. We also get firsthand quotes from past and current band members, collaborators, producers, etc. This information hasn't been as accessible before. Pieces have been around here and there. But now its in one place.
As for the book itself, physically, it is great to simply hold and flip through. The pictures are vibrant. A colorful compendium that compliments the music, highlighting the number of people and the processes involved with the production of each album. It does also evaporate some of the mythology of Anton and the band. It, ultimately, and above all else, has inspired me to get back to the albums and enjoy the music again.
The not so good:
Be prepared. There are a lot of names. So many people are interwoven throughout the story that the author is not at fault. Some bit players are more significant than others. Names get thrown at you at such a high frequency that it can almost become a distraction. Its easy to forget who is who when it comes to some of the smaller bit players that had even the most negligible role in the history of the band. I am, however, still grateful that this has been committed to record. BJM is infamous for having had a revolving door of live players - so this was something I expected.
This is a first publication and has a handful of typos that can sometimes be a distraction while reading.
Overall, once you get through some of the herky jerky bits that get slogged down by names and places, there are several passages that flow effortlessly and are fun to read."
